MOT TEST
If your vehicle exceeds 3 years of age and you intend to use it on the road, obtaining an MOT test is a legal necessity. The MOT test is essential as it involves crucial checks, and any identified defects must be addressed to ensure the vehicle’s roadworthiness.
Operating a vehicle without a valid MOT renders your car insurance and road tax invalid, and your vehicle may not meet roadworthy standards. Hence, it is crucial to ensure that your MOT certificate is up-to-date, and you schedule your next MOT before the current certificate expires. You can arrange this up to one month before the expiration of your current MOT certificate.
When is the earliest date to obtain an MOT?
An MOT is valid for one year, and its expiration date is indicated on the last pass certificate. You can secure an MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires, maintaining the same renewal date.
What if the MOT has already expired?
Driving your vehicle on the road with an expired MOT is prohibited, and you may face prosecution if caught. Exceptions exist for driving it:
- To or from a location for repair.
- To a pre-scheduled MOT test.

How long does an MOT take?
The MOT process typically lasts between 45 minutes to an hour. During this time, you can wait at the MOT centre for the examination to be completed, or you can take a brief walk while our team notifies you when your car is ready for pickup.
If your car does not pass the MOT and its certificate has expired, the identified failure items must be repaired. If the vehicle is roadworthy, you can drive it to another garage for repairs; otherwise, towing is recommended. Alternatively, you can leave your car with our skilled mechanics, who will address the issues as agreed upon, and the duration will be communicated accordingly.
What do I need to bring to my MOT?
All authorized MOT test centres can electronically access both your MOT certificate and V5C Vehicle Registration Document – the essential documents needed for processing your MOT. While it’s not mandatory, having them on hand can expedite the process.
You typically don’t need to bring additional documentation, such as insurance details, tax paperwork, logbook, or license, to your MOT test appointment. However, your car must be taxed and insured for the test to be conducted – information that any approved test centre can verify electronically. Unlike a service, there’s no need to remove items from your boot, as the MOT test doesn’t assess the condition of spare tires.
WHAT IS TESTED IN A MOT?
Our specialists will meticulously assess a comprehensive list of components in accordance with the environmental, safety, and roadworthiness regulations that govern the MOT. These encompass:
Bodywork and Structure – Our inspection will guarantee the absence of excessive corrosion that could compromise structural integrity and ensure that there are no sharp edges that pose the potential for injury.
Tow Bar – If installed, our assessment will verify proper fitting, and good condition, and ensure the presence of a functioning electrical supply. Additionally, we will check the speedometer and engine mountings for optimal performance.
Fuel System – We will conduct a comprehensive examination of all hoses and pipes, testing the system thoroughly for any potential leaks to ensure everything is securely in place. Additionally, the fuel cap will be tested to guarantee secure opening and closing.
Exhaust Emissions – Our examination will assess the condition of the exhaust components and analyze emissions, ensuring strict adherence to emissions regulations. Additionally, we will confirm secure attachment, verify the absence of noise or leaks, and conduct a test to ensure the presence of a catalytic converter if it was factory-fitted.
Seatbelts – Our inspection will include comprehensive testing of all seatbelts to ensure they are functional, safe, and securely anchored. Additionally, we will examine airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and load limiters, checking their proper operation and the functionality of their warning lights.
Seats – Our assessment will involve testing to ensure the seats are securely anchored, and we will specifically verify that the driver’s seat can be adjusted for optimal comfort and control.
Doors – Our examination will thoroughly test all doors to ensure they open and close properly, both from the inside and outside. Additionally, we will assess the security and condition of all latches, hinges, and catches to ensure they are in good working order.
Mirrors – Our assessment will confirm the presence of the minimum required number of mirrors, ensuring their secure attachment and verifying that they are in the correct condition. Additionally, we will conduct tests on indirect vision devices to ensure their proper functionality.
Load Security – Our evaluation will include checking the boot and bonnet to ensure they open and close properly, ensuring that these components are securely functioning.
Brakes – Our examination will involve testing the braking efficiency with the wheels on, incorporating the MOT efficiency test. This assessment will also encompass the electronic parking brake, ESC (electronic stability control), and ABS (anti-lock braking system) if they are standard features.
Additionally, all dashboard warning lights, including the brake fluid warning light, will be thoroughly checked to ensure their proper functioning.
Wheels and Tyres – Our inspection will cover a range of criteria, including checking for the security of wheels, assessing their general condition, examining tread depth, and verifying the appropriate size and type.
For vehicles registered after 1st January 2012, we will also check the TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system) for proper functionality.
It’s important to note that spare wheels and tyres are not included in the MOT assessment.
Registration Plates – Our assessment will involve testing both plates to ensure compliance with regulations regarding correct colour, font, characters, and spacing. We will also verify that the plates are fitted correctly.
Additionally, the VIN (vehicle identification number) will be checked to ensure that a single VIN is correctly displayed.
Headlights – Our thorough examination will include checking the headlights, including high-intensity discharge (HID) and light-emitting diode (LED) types, to ensure they are functioning properly, clean, securely attached, levelled, and correctly aimed.
Additionally, the main beam warning light will be tested to ensure its proper functionality.
Bonnet – Our assessment will include testing to ensure the bonnet closes securely, ensuring proper closure and security.
Washers, Wipers, and Windscreen – All these components will be thoroughly tested to ensure they enable the driver to clearly view the road, providing optimal functionality.
Horn – Our evaluation will involve testing to ensure the horn works properly and is the correct type for the vehicle, ensuring both functionality and compliance with vehicle specifications.
Steering and Suspension – Our assessment will thoroughly check the condition of these components for any inappropriate repairs and signs of corrosion. Additionally, we will examine the steering oil level, the functionality of the steering lock, and verify the proper operation of all relevant dashboard warning lights.
Electrics – Our examination will encompass testing the battery and inspecting any visible electrical wiring to ensure their proper functionality and condition.
